WOMEN'S DAY TO, "THE MOURNING DAY"
March 8th,
is celebrated as women’s day all over the world. We can watch all the women
related shows on television too. This is one day which gets completely
dedicated to the women folk. The men are expected to be extra sweet and polite
to the women.
I remember
being offered the seat on the bus because it was the Women’s day. I wish people
had that awareness and care throughout the year. Not because we are so called “Abala”
but simply because we totally deserve it.
Media has
often given hype to this day, which is a good thing. But do we really deserve
to celebrate this day?
In the class
tenth, the teacher often asks to read the newspaper every day. The students are
asked the news every morning. Raju, forgot to read the newspaper that day and
he was asked to tell the news on that same day. He confidently stood and said,
“Miss, there was a rape case near our village last night”. Is it? How come I didn't hear of it? “Yes Miss. There was such news. Okay, she says and moves on
to the next student.
Raju sits
and tells the boy next to him that, he really didn’t read the paper that day
but as it was the most common news on papers every day, he told it. Such is the
situation today.
Every
newspaper starts, highlighting such news on the first page. The rape cases have
become as common as the advertisements of “Pinky and Polo fashion sales in
Mangalore.
The Delhi
gang rape case had evoked the sense of awareness among the people. We went on
rallies and performed dramas related to the safety of the women too. The media
also made the effort to seek justice for the “Brave heart”.
The days
went on and everything got cooled down. It was thought as some sad incidence
which took place in a far off place. There was a little hope that we are safer
than the women out there. The hopes shattered when we heard of “The home stay
attack”, “Soujanya rape case” in Ujre, The abduction and gang rape of the
Medical student, in Manipal, The very recent Deralakatte incident also brought
the disgrace to the women folk in our very own Mangalore.
There are
several cases which go without being reported due to the conservative mindset
of the society which believes in blaming the victim.
In such
cases, only the rapist has to be blamed. Not the victim. It is completely the
fault of the rapist. The society needs to understand this and strive on this
very important point to be more understanding towards such brave hearts who try
to face the world after it. In most of the cases, society plays the role in
further killing of her hopes to survive and face the world strongly. Stricter
punishments are the must.
There are
also the sexually motivated crimes against women. The dowry cases, There are
thousands of women who do cry on this celebratory day. Questioning on, “What is
so celebratory about being a women?”
Just a day
of rallies and dramas on Women is not enough. There is a serious need of Safety
of women.
Such cases
must be dealt with extra care. Women irrespective of caste and religion have to
be respected and the complaint has to be filed. Stricter and faster judgment
has to be passed against the rapists which will prove to be the deterrent
against such crimes in future. The doctors, the police authorities must strive
towards bringing the justice to the victim and not get under malpractice due to
the power of Money. Today someone else is victimized. Tomorrow, it could be
your own daughter.
Miss Disha,
wishes to adopt many boys. The feminist side of me questioned, why only boys?
She said, so that I can bring up good boys in the society. I wish more of such
efforts are been put in the upbringing of the boys. Enough is
heard on how to keep the girls submissive and enough of restrictions have been put up on the girls. But that is not the remedy to the crimes taking place today.
heard on how to keep the girls submissive and enough of restrictions have been put up on the girls. But that is not the remedy to the crimes taking place today.
There has to
be some change now. The parents must put in extra efforts in the good
upbringing of their sons. Make them the responsible citizens and most
importantly, “Good human beings”.
Maybe then
we could think of celebrating “Women’s day”. Now we are only mourning on the
women who have, and are been suffering from all the ill treatment today. Let us
take a moment to pray for all those brave hearts, which shed their lives
because of the demons in disguise of the human and also those, who survived
such terror. Let lord give them the strength and us, the knowledge to realize,
that they aren't to be blamed.
